SC-8000RF: Servo Controller with RF Module

  SC-8000RF
Servo Controller with RF Module

This project involves connecting the SC-8000P (ppm only) module with a standard RC transmitter module. Allowing the PC to be the "computer" in a "computer radio" setup.

Essentially this is just a compact version of a SC-8000P connecting to a Transmitter. Since I will use the PC to send the position commands, a whole transmitter can be overkill for the idea of transmitting RF using the PC. Although the idea of using the transmitter trainer port to transmit RF has some advantages; such as manual control "instructor take over"; the idea of a standard PC controlled "RF deck" has merit in various UAV and UGV applications. Especially when you are using standard PC control input (joysticks, pads, etc...), you do not need the transmitter.

Pictured above is the SC-8000RF, which uses an industry standard Transmitter RF module. I just happen to choose the Hitec Spectra since it's a synthesized module, where you can dial-in any channel within its band. The available Spectras cover the 72MHz band (channel 11 to 60); the 75MHz band (channel 61 to 90). Of course the "single channel" module will also work. The picture on the right shows the SC-8000RF with three modules; a Spectra 72, a Spectra 75, and a Single channel module.

The SC-8000RF will also work with Futaba FM modules; yes, including the older FP-TP-AM modules if you need to send RF in AM modulation to run some older AM receivers. In using the modules, frequencies requirements from other regions besides North America can be used by just snapping in the right module. Hitec is planning to release the Spectra in 35MHz and 40MHz "soon". I am putting my request for the 36MHz version due to numerous requests from RCers in Australia.

At the present time, I am working with Hitec to make the SC-8000RF "official" to clear up any FCC issues. This is somewhat like Futaba which did not "approve" the use of the Spectra in its radios, thus politically not allowing a great option for Futaba radios (rumors has it this may change). Unlike Futaba, I say yes to the Spectra on my SC-8000RF. Until that is cleared up, the SC-8000RF will remain as a "development" projects.

SC-8000RF Features:

  • SC8000P USB servo controller with PPM output

  • Industry standard TX module for RF transmission

  • 750mAH NiMH battery pack (9.6V)

  • Recharge jack for battery

  • -shift or +shift selection

  • Standard Antenna.
